พระสมเด็จฯวัดระฆังโฆสิตาราม เป็นองค์พระประธานใน พระชุดเบญจภาคี ท่านผู้สร้าง คือ สมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์ (โต พรหมรังสี) พุทธคุณ ความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของพระสมเด็จฯระฆังฯ มีมากมาย นับว่าเป็นพระเครื่องยอดนิยมอันดับหนึ่งตั้งแต่มีวงการพระเครื่องมา ท่านเจ้าประคุณสมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์ (โต พรหมรังสี) เกิดในรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช (รัชกาลที่ ๑) ที่พระนครศรีอยุธยา ท่านมีอายุยืนยาวนานถึง ๕ แผ่นดิน โดยในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ ท่านเป็นหนึ่งในบุคคลไม่กี่คนที่อยู่ทันเห็น รัชกาลที่ ๑ พระองค์จริง ทั้งนี้ เมื่อท่านอุปสมบท รัชกาลที่ ๑ ทรงพระเมตตารับเป็นนาคหลวง อุปสมบทที่วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม สมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์ (โต พรหมรังสี) ท่านเป็นศิษย์ของสมเด็จพระสังฆราช (สุก) ไก่เถื่อน พระสังฆราชองค์ที่ ๔ แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ซึ่งเป็นผู้สร้าง พระสมเด็จฯอรหังขึ้น ทั้งนี้ ว่ากันว่าสมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์ (โต พรหมรังสี) ได้ดำเนินรอยตามการสร้างพระตามสมเด็จพระสังฆราช (สุก) ไก่เถื่อน ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๗ ท่านเจ้าประคุณสมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์ ได้รับพระราชทานสมณศักดิ์ เป็น “สมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์” หลังจากนั้น ๒ ปี ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๙ ท่านได้เริ่มสร้างพระสมเด็จฯวัดระฆังโฆสิตาราม สำหรับมูลเหตุในการสร้างพระสมเด็จฯวัดระฆังนั้น เล่ากันว่า เมื่อครั้งที่ท่านขึ้นไปเยี่ยมญาติที่จังหวัดกำแพงเพชร ซึ่งเป็นเมืองหนึ่งที่มีชื่อเสียงเรื่องพระพิมพ์ ในครั้งนั้นท่านได้พบพระพิมพ์โบราณที่วัดเสด็จซึ่งเป็นวัดร้าง ท่านจึงได้นำพระพิมพ์เหล่านั้นกลับมาบางส่วนพร้อมทั้งดำริที่ว่าจะสร้างพระเพื่อสืบทอดพระพุทธศาสนาเหมือนดังที่คนโบราณได้กระทำมา สำหรับมวลสารที่ใช้ในการสร้าง
